Como Courtyard

The quaint little town of Como holds many surprises along its short main street. The buildings are mostly renovated from original structures and include several restaurants, shops, two churches, and a delightful B&B.

Como Courtyard is an unpretentious restored mercantile store that Kay and Rick King purchased in 2000 and opened as a B&B. Those who enter find a classy, yet homey retreat that guests describe as “wonderful,” “charming,” and “a perfect delight.” Kay states that they have tried to retain the building’s 19th century appeal but adds, “We do offer such amenities as wireless internet, big screen TV, a hot tub, a fully equipped kitchen, and grill. We serve a continental breakfast that includes fresh-baked bread and muffins for guests to enjoy at their leisure.”

The rooms are immaculate and decorated with natural colors, comfortable furnishings, and antiques. An exposed-brick wall along one side of the rooms and the old tin ceiling add to the ambience. The wooden floor is original to the structure and Kay has left it in its aged condition, increasing the charm of the building.

The open courtyard beyond, quite reminiscent of those found in the Italian countryside or the French Quarter of New Orleans, encloses a serene retreat where nature’s sounds are present in the soft spatter of water from the central fountain, wind rustling the leaves of the trees, and quiet bird songs. There is a gigantic Bradford pear and several stately crepe myrtles with their drifting white petals littering the ancient brick floor like snowflakes.

Beyond the courtyard is yet another treat—a small cottage that was added when the mercantile was renovated. It contains a cozy bedroom with a queen bed and an oversized bath with Jacuzzi tub and separate shower.

Pets and children are welcome at Como Courtyard. Kay even has a baby bed. It is the perfect place to slow down, and its small town location offers an excuse to rediscover a slower pace, read a good book, stroll down Main or Sycamore Streets, enjoy an excellent meal at one of the nearby restaurants, or just relax in the courtyard.
