Blue Creek Cabin

Blue Creek Cabin, nestled in the back of a hayfield near Oxford, is approached by a long driveway lined with cherry trees and is reminiscent of a cabin straight out of one of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie books. In fact, for several years school children in the surrounding area visited this charming 1800’s era log cabin while studying this well-known series. Rock fences surround rambling gardens of sunflowers, zinnias, and other colorful flowers that are guarded by towering garden men designed by the owner. A large patio adjacent to the cabin beckons one outdoors to build a bonfire, to grill steaks, or simply to unwind.

Blue Creek Cabin, owned by Lee Ann and Mark Brewer, was taken apart log-by-log in Tennessee and meticulously reconstructed here in Mississippi. It is filled with unusual pieces such as Amish-made tables, antique and primitive cabinets from Randolph, a wonderful old stone fireplace made from the cabin’s original stones, an over-sized copper bathtub, and many of Lee Ann’s own creations. The downstairs bedroom was originally a log smokehouse belonging to Mark’s uncle and was added onto the original cabin. The larger bedroom is upstairs with a king bed and comfortable seating and is the perfect place to snuggle in with a good book.

Lee Ann is a talented decorator, craftsperson, and gardener, and her special touches can be found throughout the interior and exterior of the cabin—from the shotgun shells that edge the kitchen counters, the interestingly framed photos of the original cabin, and the old hand-operated water pump in the kitchen, to the rustic garden art and bottle tree.

The wide porches that extend the length of the cabin are perfect for relaxing during most seasons, but during the coldest days of winter, the wood-burning fireplace tempts you to come inside.

Each morning a delicious, freshly prepared breakfast is served on the porch or in front of the fireplace, according to the guests’ desires. Lee Ann also provides plenty of snacks. An abundance of seasonal flowers and plants in buckets and baskets throughout the cabin bring the outdoors inside.

Though Blue Creek Cabin certainly has its share of modern conveniences, such as TV, refrigerator, stand-alone shower, microwave, and coffee maker, they are hidden inside cabinets or behind doors, lending an air of authenticity to the cabin. Lee Ann has a meticulous eye for detail and she incorporates many special features into the cabin. Lee Ann believes that the cabin has “a magical appeal that nourishes the soul.” Her guests agree, using phrases such as “perfect in every way,” “a special treasure,” and “totally delightful” to describe this very memorable place.
